Massachusetts medical marijuana cards are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Here’s what renewal actually costs and when to start.
When to renew
Your card expires on the anniversary of your original registration date. The Cannabis Control Commission allows patients to renew up to 60 days before expiration, which is the window we’d recommend using — it gives you buffer time if your renewal evaluation needs to be rescheduled, and there’s no lapse in your registration if you renew before the expiration date.
What renewal costs
The state itself charges nothing to renew your registration. As with a new card, the real cost is the clinician evaluation required to certify you again — Massachusetts doesn’t allow a card to renew automatically without a new clinical assessment. What the renewal visit covers
A renewal evaluation is a full clinical reassessment, not a formality — your clinician reviews your current conditions, relevant medications, and cannabis experience since your last certification, the same as a new-patient visit. Certification is a clinical decision made at that visit; it isn’t automatic and isn’t guaranteed in advance, whether it’s your first certification or your fifth renewal.
